Exhibit #2:
This is an historic scene from the Isles of Shoals, a small group of islands that ranges across the Maine, New Hampshire border just east of Portsmouth, NH. This plein aire painting was created while teaching a workshop on Appledore Island, ME. Appledore is famous for watercolors by Childe Hassam, created during the period that Celia Thaxter ran a resort there, focusing on a salon of artists, writers, and musicians. Ms. Greaf was standing by Celia Thaxter’s famous garden, looking toward the area designated, then and now, as the swimming “pool”. Cornell now uses the island to teach Marine Science.
