The gentleman who runs North Fork Landscaping, Pete Dooley,  is indeed, a good friend. In his work removing trees downed by storm or sickness, all over the North Fork, Shelter Island, etc., if he  comes upon wood he feels might interest me, he drops said wood off at  my studio.  That, basically, is how this piece came into being. The heavy sycamore log Pete dropped off that autumn day in 2005 started me thinking: its look made me believe that it was beautifully suited for creating something solid ---i.e., with a heavy look. The day this log arrived, it was soon chain sawed into a usable blanks and this bowl was rough-turned. It was sealed, placed in a paper bag and stored in the barn to slowly air dry. Two years later with its moisture content down to about 8 percent, it was ready for turning. I turned the finished bowl with a 1-inch thick wall so I would be able to carve it, both inside and out.  The resulting bowl has a feeling of ‘lightness’, despite the fact it is heavy-walled. Because of the considerable amount of work entailed creating this vessel, I named it “Basket Case”.
