After finishing ‘Imagination’ I felt self-challenged to attempt other interesting square forms by turning them on the lathe, a machine where it is natural to create round objects. In all, I designed ten or 12 such pieces, with varying degrees of success. This vessel was one of those that I was most pleased with; now I plan to create a series of vessels in this genre. Since it would be painted, I created this vessel using wood which I felt was rather bland; i.e., a piece of maple which had no spectacular graining. But since I believe that maple’s hardness makes it very desirable for turning, I was determined to uncover the beauty that I knew was inside this peace of wood.  After turning the square bowl, a basket-weave texture was carved into its rim while the bowl section was left perfectly smooth. The piece was completed with satin-black finish.
