Recently, for a creative change of pace, I began turning a variety of food items which I felt could be duplicated in wood, such as apples, pears and mushrooms. Since I have often painted fruit on canvas, the thought occurred why not paint wooden fruit? While a student at The Art School, Pratt Institute, our still life assignments frequently were food arrangements. That is when I had the idea create a three-dimensional still life such as, “Still Life: Cherry Bowl with Green Apples”. The work consists of a bowl turned from a cherry log while the cherry bowl while the wood was still green wood, which means that the turned shape will change as the green wood dries. And this was exactly what I wanted for the bowl that would hold the turned ‘green apples’. I shaped the rim to enhance such warping as my goal was to produce a 3D ‘Still Life’ with a ‘painterly’ feeling. Cherry Bowl with Green Apples is well suited for use as either dining table centerpiece or coffee table conversation piece. |
