A few years ago, at my wife Maureen’s request, I turned my first cake pedestal. It was her intent to use it at table center at a function we would be hosting. Since that time,
Maureen has often used it, receiving compliments each and every time she did. Since it proved so popular with friends and associates, I began turning a limited number of cake pedestals each year for gallery sale. The majority of them are similar to the stand shown, of pine and finished to present an authentic American Country look.  Pine is the wood used most often for such cake stands but, on those occasions when the ‘right’ wood comes along, I have also turned stands of maple, walnut and cherry.
I use a non toxic, oil-based finish which completely outgases in about three weeks which means that it is perfectly safe for holding food. The wax I apply is also completely safe for humans; it is a wax mixture I make myself that consists of mineral oil and beeswax.
