Of all things I have created on the lathe, I think I most enjoy turning the hollow forms, like the one shown here. Every woodturner knows that this task presents a high degree of difficulty; hard work at best   and daunting at least. The challenge is to bring the exterior to an aesthetically-pleasing shape followed by  hollowing out its inside. While doing so   the goal is to maintain a consistent relatively thin wall, generally a wall thickness of 1/4 to 3/8”.
The hollow form shown here was turned from hard maple. When I was satisfied with the vessel’s shape, the piece was bleached to highlight the  extraordinary grain running throughout.
