When the cherry burl that this piece was created from came into my studio, I could hardly wait to get started on it. The shape of the burl, which was loaded with occlusions----holes and voids created naturally, immediately suggested what shape should be created from it. Within 24 hours the burl was mounted on the lathe and shaping began. Basically, turning such a burl is difficult because chisel edge is constantly passing from solid to wood to thin air, and back again---over and over again as the wood spins. Saying the task is a difficult one almost borders on understatement. Not surprisingly, many Woodturners, me included, thrive on this challenge. You are successful when the finished piece displays the occlusions as nature made them in the log. Upon its completion, this vessel became one of my wife’s favorites thus; it now resides in her collection. Happily, I do have similar pieces in various stages of development and when they are finished they will go to our gallery.
