The three important things to me when I paint in oils are color, shape and texture.
I see objects as shapes and like to explore the patterns they make when placed together on the flat surface of the canvas.
I love to explore the buttery nature of the oil paints and apply the paint thickly enough to hold the marks of the brush. This 'impasto' style brushwork adds texture to my paintings and is used to define shapes and emphasise spatial relationships.
The painting of 'Tomatoes' seen here is one of a series of fruits and vegetables with a culinary feel. It won first place in the fine arts section of the Long Island Fair, 2002. Others available in this series include: onions, peppers, and oranges.
