Natural History Related Puppet shows...Your place or mine.
Since 1987, Tom Stock, a former science teacher and park ranger, has performed his puppet shows in local schools, libraries, and at art festivals. Most recent performances include the Environmental Film Festival in Greenport, Solarfest in Brentwood, t
he Garlic Festival in Riverhead and the March for Light Puppet Show at Huntington Cinema. His shows all include natural history and environmental themes such as farm animals, the pine barrens, the solar system, the universe and the sea, to name just a few. During Tom’s puppet show, science concepts and facts are learned within an evolving saga and there is a message that goes beyond the science. Tom combines entertainment with science and engages the audience through the story, the puppets, the motion, the props and special effects, through music and rhythm bringing a holistic venue to young and old. Children are invited to handle puppets, name them, give them a voice and come backstage and become part of the show. “We all need active engagement rather than just passive show and tell. Developing thinking skills is predicated on involvement of the whole child, all the senses” says Tom. At his last count Tom had over 56 puppets in his repertoire, most are simple stick puppets, some are just heads that need a body to come “alive” and some have moving mouth parts. Most shows last for 15 to 20 minutes and are followed by a review and a hands-on table where the children can experience various aspects of the concepts that were presented in the show.
