We had a very funny sort of spring and summer. Too much rain, not enough hot, sunny days, skies filled with clouds that loomed for weeks. Even the cicada's were confused and didn't start singing in earnest till August. Sometimes summer can be like that; fickle and elusive, gone before it even settled in. Fall on the other hand is faithful; leaves will turn, the air will become chilly, birds will head south. Personally, I am a spring person; it generally holds so much promise. Now, however, I have a new appreciation for the predictability of autumn. With a topsy turvy year of many changes and uncertainty somehow this season feels comforting. Predictability feels good during a time when we've all had to make so many adjustments. So that is the theme of this newsletter; adjusting - literally and figuratively. Learning to adjust is a challenge we face as humans throughout our existences in order to manage life's ebbs and flows. I hope you enjoy the wisdom that our villagers have generously shared.
I wish you all Autumnal abundance.

Villager in the Spotlight
by Charlene Burton
Legends Hair Designs - Stony Brook
Ever since I moved to the Three Village area almost ten years ago, I have been impressed by how this community as a whole, is particularly devoted to breast cancer awareness, research and patient support. October is breast cancer awareness month. So every fall many local residents and businesses do many things to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this terrible
|
disease. Every year, as the leaves turn, I am humbled by the level of devotion and amount of time and energy put into this cause.
This month one of our newest "villagers" Patrick Parent, owner of Legends Hair Designs in the Stony Brook Village Shopping Center joined the fight. When the "GIFT" program approached him to do Cut For A Cure, Patrick didn't hesitate. He and his fabulous staff were ready to help any way they could.
Patrick has worked in the area for over 26 years and continues to do so as a business owner, having bought the salon in June. Legend's is warm and welcoming, where you feel more like family than a patron. So it's no surprise that his Cut for a Cure was a great success. With an abundance of raffles from local businesses, and a staff ready to make everyone beautiful, wraps, snacks, and refreshments, it was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.
Congratulations to Patrick and the staff of Legends Hair designs for donating their time and effort to such an incredibly worthy cause. We are proud to put him in the ThreeVillagePeople.com Villager Spotlight.

Now That You've Had Your First Adjustment
(Chiropractic Adjustment)
By Dr. Henri Rosenblum
Congratulations on experiencing your first Chiropractic adjustment at POWER ON Chiropractic and Nutrition! Minor structural deviations in your spine (subluxations) have most likely been present in your body for some time before today's adjustment. As a result, your body and mind have become accustomed to behavior patterns produced by a nervous system which has not, and is not working at its best. And since it is
|
your nervous system which controls EVERYTHING, you shouldn't be surprised that your health has been slowly deteriorating.
Change has already begun with your very first adjustment. You may notice that you are immediately breathing with greater ease. You may notice that when you return to your car that you could actually look over your shoulder to look behind you. You may feel like you are standing straighter and taller. You may notice an immediate decrease in your symptoms and an increased ease within your being. Perhaps you are not quite sure what you feel, but you know you feeldifferent, because you are different. Basically, with less stress onyour nerves, for the first time in years, perhaps decades, your spines' release of tension is a positive sign that you are beginning to heal. Perhaps you had an ailment, pain, or symptom you were hoping would resolve when you first entered Power On. You may be wondering how the adjustment is affecting that particular region of your body that concerns you. The adjustment has allowed your spine and nervous system to begin to recover from nonproductive patterns of behavior and to dissipate energy that has been stored within the spinal system. The adjustment is achieved as a result of your body beginning its reeducation process. Your spine and nervous system are able to better express spinal stability and integrity. You are awakening right at this very moment. And from this moment on, a healthier spine and nervous system and an improved quality of life is within your reach.
What happens next?
All this and more has already begun to happen. Consistent adjustments will help this process to continue. Consistent care will enable you to reduce re-injury, enhance self-correction and allow for a greater communication between your brain and body cells. A spine and nervous system which has regained its integrity is more flexible, recovers and learns from the past, and adapts to (deals with) the present more effectively and constructively. Chiropractic, as I practice, offers you and your family the opportunity to improve your quality of life as measured through a wide range of health indicators. With your Power On, you can expect to be your best. And you will be! The door is open. Come in. All you have to regain is your health.

Avoid These Scary Investment Moves
It's Halloween time again, so you'll probably be seeing a lot of ghosts, goblins, witches and werewolves. While you may find these sightings more amusing than fear-inducing, you don't have to look far to find things that really are frightening - such as scary investment moves.
|
Fortunately, by recognizing these sinister steps, you can help avoid them. Here are a few to consider:
Scary Move No. 1: Trying to "time" the market - If you always knew when to "buy low and sell high," you'd be a tremendously successful investor. Unfortunately, no one can accurately predict highs and lows - and if you try to jump in and out of investments in response to speculation about where the market is heading, you could end up missing good opportunities. You're typically better off by staying invested and investing based on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and need for diversification. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss.)
Scary Move No. 2: Chasing after "hot" tips - You can get "hot" investment tips from anybody - your neighbor, your brother-in-law or even that guy you always see at the bus stop. But while these tips may be well intentioned, they may be flawed, f or a couple of reasons. First, if an investment really was "hot," by the time you hear about it and get around to purchasing it, it may already be cooling off. But more importantly, it might not be suitable for your individual needs. Look for investments that you understand and that can help you meet your goals.
Scary Move No. 3: Investing too aggressively - or too conservatively. If you invest too aggressively, you could be taking unnecessary chances. On the other hand, if you invest too conservatively, you may never achieve your long-term objectives. Try to find a mix of investments that fits your individual risk tolerance.
Scary Move No. 4: Leaving your portfolio "unbalanced" - Over time, your individual situation will change, as will the fundamentals of some of the investments you own. That's why it's important that you regularly rebalance your portfolio, possibly with the help of an experienced financial professional.
Scary Move No. 5: Failing to take advantage of investment opportunities - To help meet your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, it's important to take advantage of suitable investment opportunities. Contribute as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, as well as your IRA and other retirement accounts you may have. As an investor, your greatest ally is time, so the more years you invest - especially when you're investing in tax-advantaged accounts sobjectives.
You can't elude all the pitfalls that life may hold in store. But by avoiding these terrifying investment moves, you can help improve your prospects for long-term success - and that's not a scary thought at all.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.uch as a 401(k) and an IRA - the greater your prospects for achieving your financial goals.

Adjustments are Easier When You are Organized
"Don't get sidetracked. If you do get sidetracked, get back on track as soon as possible. Ultimately sidetracking kills you." Donald Trump
I often pondered the meaning of life, and I have found it summed up in two words."make adjustments". The organizing profession touts that life situations change |
| 'Manderine Duck' New York |

continually and even if everything is highly organized today, it doesn't mean it will be like that tomorrow. Babies come, death happens, new jobs and moves are all part of the "stuff of life". One day you're on top of the game, the next you may be on the bottom. One fifth, and the most important part of the organizing process, is maintaining. Most of my clients backslide now and then, and guess what, I have my days too. But I know the magic.. KEEP ON COURSE - Don't stop just because you drift away from your organizational path or falter badly. Airliners and spacecrafts are off course more than they are on. The secret is to do what pilots and astronauts do; make an adjustment when you realize you are off course. Don't use energy worrying about it. Just get back on course and keepheading for your destination.

The Fall Season is a Great Time to Discover Your Dream!
By Amy Mannarino
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you let your true dream or desire be known to others? Most us will go through our entire life and never tell anyone about our secret dream or desire. Why is that? We are either too afraid to admit our dream to anyone or we are so busy in a life filled with clutter that we cannot see the hidden gifts that we possess.
|
Everyone has a special talent or gift to share with the world. Hopefully, you will discover yours sooner than later! I discovered mine two years ago when I began taking voice lessons. I was strictly a "shower singer" but finally found the courage to let my secret dream out and share it with others. I created a Christmas CD for my family and close friends; most of whom did not even know that Icould sing. I surprised myself, had the time of my life and never looked back!
Most people search for their "life purpose" or work that they love only to be disappointed when they wind up finding a temporary solution to a current problem in their life. People need to look at their life as "connecting pieces" and they must be willing to examine all the areas to find happiness. We are always looking for the quick fix to bring joy into our life. Most of us wait for something to change so we can find happiness and purpose in our lives. The thing is - we are all too busy to realize that happiness doesn't just happen - we have to intend for it to happen and then we have to create it. We have to pay close attention to what we want in our life, focus on it and it will grow.
Working with a Life Coach allows a person to slow down and take a moment to spend time on oneself. Life coaching is the art of guiding another person toward a fulfilling future. A Life Coach works with a client to form a relationship and ultimately a connection occurs between the client and the coach. This connection allows for the coach to profoundly influence the client's life. A Life Coach will question the "status quo" in your life and seek creative, transformative results with you. A Life Coach serves to motivate a client, seeks deep and meaningful results, explores new directions, provides innovative suggestions, and invests in a client's future.
Why not embrace your life and invest time on yourself? "Each day comes to you with both hands full of possibilities"...Helen Keller. A Life Coach can help you create new possibilities for a lifetime of happiness. Are you ready to make a move towards your dream or desires?

Educate Yourself On Who Your Trainer Really Is!!
By Lee Cirillo - Fitness Together
Getting a fully qualified trainer is essential and can be the difference between getting your results and getting injured. If you are considering hiring a personal trainer in any capacity it is important that your trainer is able to provide you with the highest standard of care you deserve. Unfortunately it is your job to sift through all the trainers out there and find the one personal trainer that is right for you.
|
| " Monarch' Old Stony Brook |
|
In an effort to help you weed out some of the bad seeds in the training industry, consider the following things: Does the trainer hold a four-year degree, from an Accredited university in an applicable field;, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education, or another related health and fitness field? The reason this is important is that a trainer with a degree or expertise in one of these areas will have a better understanding of your body and how it will respond to exercise.
Does the trainer you are considering have any additional training and/or certifications by a nationally recognized organization? . There are many organizations that are not compliant with industry standards. Always ask about the trainer's educational background and professional certifications. Lastly, with regards to certifications, you should be aware of what education/training is necessary for your trainer to maintain their current certifications. Because personal training is in the health and wellness industry there is new information coming out daily and it is imperative that your trainer keep abreast of all the changes in order to be on top of their game as well as keeping their certifications current.
A big question people always have is with regards to insurance. All gyms do things differently and it is important you are clear that who if anyone has insurance. Some big gyms require their individual trainers to carry liability insurance it is left up to the trainer to keep they insurance current. Smaller facilities usually carry insurance for their trainers and trainers that come to your home are required to carry their own insurance. Again it is imperative you ask this question and determine that insurance is in place god forbid you are injured.
It imperative that you find out immediately if your trainer is CPR certified and if they are not DO NOT HIRE THEM!!!!!!!!!! Not that any of you are planning on having any problems while exercising, but to insure your safety the best you can - please make sure you know you are in capable hands when exercising. You also should inquire whether the facility you are exercising at has an AED (automated external defibrillator) on the premises and that your trainer is certified to us it. In the case that you are receiving training in your home it may be possible for your trainer to bring a portable one or for the real exercise enthusiast, you may consider purchasing one for your home. Your trainer should be able to respond to any reasonable and foreseeable emergency situation that could arise that might threaten your safety. Feel free to ask your trainer at any time to provide information regarding potential risks associated with each exercise you perform or exercising in general.
The more educated you are about your trainer the more satisfying and safe your exercise experience will be! Just remember, the only question that is a stupid question is the one not asked. HAPPY TRAINING AND BE SAFE!!!
